Can You Cut Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights?
This is one of the most common questions we get before a Govee install, and the honest answer has a condition attached: only the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro line is designed to be cut. That is the only Govee permanent system we install, and the reason is exactly this.
The short answer
Govee Pro strands have marked cut points between pucks and a re-termination method that keeps the run powered and weather sealed. The consumer Govee permanent light kits do not. If you cut one of those, the run ends there, everything after the cut goes dark, and the warranty is finished.
Why cutting matters on a real roofline
Houses are not sold in stock lengths. A roofline has gables, dormers, garage returns, and corners that a fixed strand length almost never lands on. When a run cannot be cut, you are left with one of three bad options: leave extra pucks bunched at the end, stop short and leave a dark gap, or run lights somewhere they were never meant to go. Being able to cut and re-terminate is what lets a run stop exactly where the trim stops.
Cuttable vs. not cuttable
| System | Cuttable | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro | Yes, at marked cut points | Custom cut and re-terminated to the roofline |
| Consumer Govee permanent kits | No | We do not install these |
| InvisiLights track systems | Cut to length by design | Color matched track, tightest bulb spacing |
How we handle it on an install
We measure the roofline first, plan where each run starts and stops, and cut the Pro strand so the last puck lands on the end of the trim. We also use our own custom 3D printed clips rather than the adhesive mounts in the box, so the lights stay put through Capital Region winters instead of sagging or dropping off in February.
If you already cut yours
Do not leave the open end exposed. Water in a cut end will travel and take out more of the run. If the strand is a Pro line, it can usually be re-terminated properly. If it is a consumer kit, the cut section is done, though we can often work the remaining good section into a shorter run somewhere it makes sense.
Not sure which system you have?
Send us a photo of the strand and the controller. We install Govee Pro and InvisiLights permanent outdoor lighting across the Capital Region, and we will tell you straight whether yours can be cut. If you are still deciding between systems, our lighting pricing page lays out what each one actually costs installed.
